Description

Great for protecting the connectors on our indoor power extension and indoor power splitter cables from water, chemicals and dirt allowing them to be used outdoors! This small piece of black dual-wall heat shrink tubing is 1-inch long and has a 0.5-inch non-recovered diameter and 1/8-Inch recovered diameter. The tubing has an adhesive lined inner wall that activates once heated and creates a tough water, dirt, and chemical resistant bond after recovering from being heated. The tubing has a large 4:1 heat-shrink ratio allowing for a snug fit over rough and uneven surfaces. This piece of heat-shrink tubing is the perfect length and diameter to fit over our indoor 5.5mm x 2.1mm barrel connectors to create a water, chemical and dirt resistant barrier. It will also work with connections between an indoor 5.5mm x 2.1mm barrel connector and an outdoor (IP66 rated) 5.5mm x 2.1mm barrel connector with M12-1.75 threads. This tubing can also be used for other types of connectors such as adapters used to convert from 5.5mm x 2.1mm barrel connectors to USB and other types of miniature connectors. The tubing can be shrunk using a heat gun, a hair dryer and even an open flame from a lighter or a match. Made of flame-retardant materials. See pictures for example applications.

Overview

When heat is applied to the heat shrink tubing, it will begin shrinking and recover to 1/4 of its original diameter. This high recovery ratio of 4:1 allows it to be used in significantly more applications compared to 2:1 and 3:1 recovery ratios because it shrinks around connectors, wires and cables more tightly eliminating any air gaps making it more resistant to water, chemicals and dirt. Since this heat shrink tubing has an adhesive lined inner wall, when heat is applied, and the tubing begins to shrink, the adhesive on the inner wall melts and begins to flow pushing out air and filling any gaps. As the adhesive flows, a small fillet of adhesive (about 1 mm) becomes visible at the ends of the tubing. Once the tubing cools down, a rigid seal is formed because the adhesive strongly adheres to connectors, wires, terminals, and other surfaces. The result is a tough connection which is resistant to water, chemicals, and dirt. Also, the dual-wall design provides better rigidity and abrasion resistance allowing it to withstand wear and tear over time when compared to single-wall tubing.

WARNING

If using an open flame from a lighter or a match to shrink the tubing, please exercise caution to avoid melting or damaging the connectors and wires. Keep the open flame far enough away from the tubing so that the heat generated by the flame is just enough to shrink the tubing. The flame itself should not come in contact with the tubing as doing so might damage the connectors or cables. A similar caution should be exercised when using a heat gun or a hair dryer. Heat the tubing just enough so it is shrunk firmly around the wire and connectors. There is no need to continue heating the tubing once the tubing has stopped shrinking. Continuing to heat the tubing can result in damage to the connectors and wires. Avoid touching or handling the connection until the tubing, wires and connectors have cooled down which can take a few minutes.
